Preparing your food for the big move

What to do with your food when you're moving out

When you think of moving out, it's easy to overlook one crucial aspect: your food.

Planning ahead can not only help you save money but also prevent food waste (after all, you don't want any leftover food smelling out your flat).

Don't know where to start? Don't worry, we've put together the ultimate guide on what to do with your food before moving out of uni:

1. Take stock of your inventory

The first step is to sort through your fridge, freezer and cupboards to see what needs to be eaten before you move. Check expiry dates and prioritise items that will spoil the soonest. From here, you can create a meal plan to avoid having a full fridge by the time you need to leave.

2. Cook with what you've got

One of the most effective ways to minimise food waste is to incorporate your existing ingredient into your meals. You might not be able to make your favourite meals, but this is a great chance to get creative and experiment with new combinations!

3. Share with neighbours

If you find yourself with too much food to manage, share the bounty of your pantry with friends or neighbours who might need it. Whether you want to offer them specific items or cook a big batch of food, this is the perfect farewell to your community.

4. Don't waste, donate

Do a good deed before you leave by donating some of your food items to a local food bank or shelter. Many charitable organisations accept canned goods, dry pasta, rice and other non-perishable products, offering you one last chance to lend a helping hand to those who need it in your area.

5. Restock wisely

Is your fridge almost empty but moving day is just around the corner? Don't drown yourself in more food than needed, limit your grocery shopping and focus on essentials only. Grab what ingredients you need to make a few meals, even on the go, so you can save money and reduce the hassle.
