Your guide to making the most of food and drink at College

Hungry between classes? Craving a caffeine fix? UAL Catering has got you covered. Below is all of the essential information you need to make the most in our canteens and cafés.

Everything you need to know about...

Whether you're vegan, vegetarian or just eating more mindfully, there's something for you in our daily offer. Need halal or gluten-free? Just check in with us!

If you do have any specific dietary concerns or allergies, our trained Allergen Champions are on-site and happy to help answer any questions or advise on safe choices. Please ask them every time you visit as our ingredients may have changed since your last visit and some products may not be suitable for those with severe allergies.

Please note that, while some dishes are made without gluten-containing ingredients, our kitchens are not fully gluten-free, so there is a risk of cross contamination. Similarly, we do our best to serve Halal chicken when it's available from our suppliers, and if it meets the right standards, we clearly label it on the menu that day.

We run regular term-time promotions and meal deals across our cafés and canteens. Some of the best value choices include:

  • Everyday discounts: Soup with bread from £3.40, or the popular Campus Special from £4.15.
  • Lunch deals: Add a selected soft drink to your Campus Special for £5.50.
  • Pre-paid packages: Eat well for less with the UAL Food and Drink Package, giving you access to freshly prepared nutritious meals Monday to Friday during term time (more information to come soon).
  • Loyalty scheme: Pick up a loyalty card in our cafés and get 2 stamps every time you get a hot drink in a reusable mug or cup, and get a free tea or coffee after every 10 stamps.

You can find out what is on the menu displayed in each canteen, on the Halls Life website, and on the @ualcatering Instagram Stories every week.

UAL is proud to be the only UK university to hold the ‘Gold Food for Life Served Here’ award for 10 years running, which means we meet the highest standards for ethical, environmentally friendly and freshly prepared food.

We’ve also been awarded the Green Kitchen Standard by the Soil Association, showing our commitment to sustainability in the energy, food waste and water. Our chefs work with seasonal ingredients and carefully sourced produce to ensure the meals are both tasty and good for you. If you want, you can find calories information for each main meal and drink on the daily menus and coffee boards on site.

We also offer a variety of food concepts including worldwide, timeless classics, student favourites, celebratory food, guest-chef experiences and trendy pop-ups.

We have a wide range of hot and cold drinks in our cafés to choose from. We serve Benugo and Extract Coffee Roasters coffee, with our house espresso being 'Rocket'

We also serve a variety of other drinks including matcha, kefir, kombucha, teas, seasonal drinks and more.

Each campus has either a café or canteen, or both, on site depending on size. We have a total of 6 canteens and 10 cafés across our 7 campuses. Take a look at our canteens and see what our students have to say.

Our catering outlets are open Monday to Friday, with opening hours depending on the campus and time of year. You can check the most up-to-date hours on the UAL website

Whether you're buying food or bringing your own, all of our cafés and canteens have seating areas where you can eat, hang out, or catch up on some reading or laptop work. It's a relaxed space to take a break from your studies or connect with friends.

Like most places, our canteens and cafés can get quite busy around peak lunchtime – usually between 1 and 2pm. If you prefer a quieter experience, we'd suggest coming around 12pm or later. Alternatively, the Grab and Go options are perfect for a quick bite.

Sustainability is a huge part of what we do. Our food is ethically sourced and we’re proud to be accredited by organisations like the Soil Association Organic, RSPCA Assured, and Certified Sustainable Seafood.

We also prioritise regional sourcing to cut down food miles. Our coffee suppliers, Extract Coffee Roasters and Benugo, work directly with farming communities and support sustainable trade practices.

More info can be found in our sustainability booklet.

We always want to hear your thoughts on how we can improve. There's an anonymous feedback form you can access any time by scanning the QR code in the seating areas of our cafés and canteens. Plus, we run in-person surveys twice a year where you can share your opinions and help shape future menus and offers.

If you have a not-so-great experience in the canteen or café, we encourage you to reach out to the manager on site which is happy to assist you.

Occasionally, we might have part-time positions available for students. When that happens, it will be promoted on accessible points and notice boards inside the catering outlets.

All of our cafés and canteens are cashless. We accept all major debit and credit cards across all the catering outlets.
